What’s that sound? *Quel est ce bruit?*

Purpose: Encourage creativity and interest in activities away from the computer or screen. Encourage listening to common noises.

Requirements: five objects that make a fairly loud sound, large opaque scarf (or carp or sleeping mask)

Number of participants: 2+

Age : (a young child must be accompanied by an adult for this activity)

Steps to follow:

  • Find a person who wants to identify the sounds you are going to produce.
  • Find objects that make distinctive sounds by moving, hitting or touching them:
    • Gently tap a spoon in a glass
    • Rub two spoons
    • Door stop spring
    • Alarm
    • Running water
    • Blow air through a straw with a little bit of liquid at the bottom of the glass
    • Drop a book on the floor
    • Click on a pen
    • Hit a desk with a ruler
    • Give a kiss to your elbow
  • Search for items in and out of the house, if possible, to increase your inventory.
  • When you found all your items, ask the participant to sit comfortably.
  • Blindfold him/her with a scar, cap or sleeping mask.
  • Make sure the participant can breathe easily.
  • Get close to the participant and make a sound with the object(s).
  • Repeat the sound until the participant guesses or admits he/she has no idea what the sound is.
  • Then move on with the next object.
  • At the end, the participant removes his blindfold and can see all the objects.
  • One point if awarded for each correctly determined object.
  • After this game, if the participant wishes to find himself/herself objects that make sounds, the organizer puts the objects away and wait until the participant has found all his/her objects.
  • Repeat if you still have energy for another round.

Variations

  • Find objects that make sounds loud enough for a person on the phone to hear them. Prepare your objects before calling the person who will try to guess. Don’t forget to turn off the camera when the participant tries to identify the object. The person guessing must hear the object without seeing it.
  • Choose rarely used objects (see attic, garage, bottom of closets, ...)
  • Combine objects (stretching an elastic band on a bottle, heating water in a kettle, stapling cardboard, …)
